Holiday Napkins
Techniques Class: Use a narrow hem foot to make round napkins
2 Hours
Have you tried this odd looking foot? Maybe tried it and decided it wasn’t for you and tossed it into a drawer? Getting good results with a narrow hem foot on a straight edge is tricky. We will jump right in and take it to the next level by sewing around a 20” diameter circle. When we are done you will have a set of 4 circular dinner napkins with an elegant rolled hem edge.
Bring to class:
¨ Rolled hem foot. 3 or 4 mm is recommended. Sample was made using Bernina foot #69
¨ 1.25 yards of cotton fabric, prewashed, dried and pressed. Prewashing is necessary because cotton shrinks when it is washed, and it shrinks different amounts on the crosswise vs lengthwise grain. If we cut a perfect circle from off-the-bolt fabric, when it is washed, it would become an oval.
- Rotary cutter with a new blade
- 50-weight cotton or polyester thread
- Sewing machine that will do a zig-zag stitch
- Basic sewing supplies
